Voices from AFAR

Voices from AFAR

Voices from AFAR is an ensemble performing music of healing and recovery. The band performs with Dr. Patrick Carnes and is featured on the Gentle Path Press audio series Spiritual Skill Set.

Dr. Max Haskett, a therapist in Nashville, Tennessee, had a vision of bringing some of his musical clients together with the hope we would create music with a recovery message. Introducing us to one another was a difficult accomplishment within the restrictions of professional confidentiality to which Dr. Max Haskett so adamantly adheres. To this day none of us, not even Max, can explain how we all met, but we did and the Voices From AFAR began. Our first show was performed at the Radio Café in Nashville for the renowned writer, speaker and therapist Dr. Patrick Carnes. He was impressed enough to take us on the road with him.

History now records that the decade of the 1990’s witnessed an unfolding interrelationship of circumstances for the initial blending of addiction research and psychotherapeutic healing within Nashville, TN. Several of Nashville’s music community songwriters and performers participated in this psychotherapeutic healing process as offered by Life Management Center, Inc. Through diverse LMC psychotherapy group experiences, these talented musicians began to recognize their common passion for recovery. Assisted by layers of personal healing, they began merging their new emotional health into their song writing professions. Various songs of recovery and the recovery journey came to be heard in Nashville.

In 2000, the documentation of the American Foundation for Addiction Research (AFAR), founded by the renowned writer, speaker and psychologist, Dr. Patrick Carnes, was received and distributed by Max and Kathleen Haskett to many of their Life Management Center clients. Some of the musicians asked if they could help AFAR some way. The idea emerged to create a CD of recovery songs which could help raise awareness and money for AFAR. Thus, the musicians met to select songs from a fairly large repertoire to include on this CD. They first performed together at the Radio Café in Nashville on June 21, 2001 for Dr. Patrick Carnes. He was impressed enough to take them on the road with him to perform at his various seminars and conferences all over the country. Through AFAR and the support of the Nashville music community, the CD “Voices from AFAR” was produced within a few short months, and the group had its official beginning.

The founding members of The Voices From AFAR were Stephanie Urbina Jones, Porter Howell, Templeton Thompson, Boh Cooper, and Paul Jefferson. Several others have also contributed their songwriting talents such as Templeton's husband, Sam Gay.
